Children's Health Week returns to the Virtual Spectator Bermuda Masters Squash
Championship once again for 2006, providing hundreds of lucky children with the
opportunity to see some of the world's finest and healthiest athletes in action.
Children's Health Week is a collaboration between public and private schools, youth
organisations, junior sports groups and a host of local sponsors. The ultimate goal
is to promote a healthy lifestyle to Bermuda's youth, and to introduce boys and
girls to the excitement of squash. It provides Bermuda's youngsters with the chance
to be a part of one of the biggest and best sporting events on the calendar, not
only as spectators but also (hopefully) as eventual players. Indeed, students are
given the opportunity to meet the players and to try their hand at the game.
Following the success of last year, scholarships will again be awarded to outstanding
candidates from the Bermuda Junior Squash Program. These scholarships offer free
private weekly coaching, group sessions, equipment and annual membership to the
BSRA. Last year's winners have benefited hugely from their awards and their squash
skills are improving rapidly.
Throughout the week children will command courtside seats, have the opportunity
to meet with the players, learn more about squash first hand, and discover how a
squash player's lifestyle, as with any other world-class athlete, enables them to
perform at peak levels of fitness. The players on the world professional tour are
excellent role models for youngsters and they welcome the opportunity to interact
with them.
Special coaching clinics run by the stars will take place throughout the week, while
some lucky individuals will have the chance to play against one of the world's top
players on the state-of-the-art, all-glass court in front of capacity crowds.
Squash can provide a valuable stepping-stone to a higher education - something that
has been demonstrated by the number of graduates of the BSRA program who have used
squash to help them gain scholarships and acceptance into top quality North American
and British high schools and universities. It is our sincere hope that CHW will
introduce to the sport those children who haven't already participated in our program,
and that it will assist them in their efforts to obtain a top-quality education.

healthy lifestyle.
