Nick Kyme vs. David Palmer
Game 1
- Kyme serving
- Kyme starts well - 2-1 up before hitting the ball down.
- 2-2. Palmer plays a great boast to go 3-2 up.
- A great winning drive down the right from Kyme. 3-3.
- Palmer drops into the nick front left 4-3
- A long rally ends with Kyme hitting the tin front left. 5-3.
- Another marathon rally! Great drops and cross-courts from both players. Palmer wins
it stretching Kyme on the right. 6-3.
- Kyme gets a bad bounce out of the front left - stroke to Palmer 7-3.
- Fantastic boast from back left has Kyme beat at the front. 8-3.
- Let ball after it seems that Kyme has played a winning drop front left.
- Kyme tins it front right. 9-3 to Palmer.
- Two great lobs put Kyme in trouble at the back of the court 10-3.
- A quick service win from Palmer, then Kyme tins it front right. Palmer takes the
first game 11-4.
Game 2
- Palmer serving
- Great cross-court drive into nick at front left by Palmer. 1-0.
- Kyme tins it in the next rally. 2-0.
- A boast by Kyme from back left corner hits the tin. 3-0.
- Kyme caught by a drop at the front - ends up doing the splits. 4-0
- Another tin shot from Kyme. 5-0.
- Palmer takes another point, then there is a let. 6-0.
- An attempted drop front left does not pay off for Kyme. 7-0.
- Kyme tins a service ball. 8-0.
- Tight rally down the left, followed by drops at the front. Kyme plays a sublime
shot. 1-8.
- Another fine shot takes Kyme to 2-8.
- A nick front left beats Kyme. 9-2.
- A great rally where Kyme pulls a shot out of nowhere from the back right. 3-9.
- Two easy points for Palmer - 11-3. Palmer now leads two games to zero.
Game 3
- Palmer serving
- Early pressure by Palmer - 1-0.
- Another fine boast from back left is unreachable by Kyme. 2-0 to Palmer
- Hard shot by Kyme is a winner. 1-2.
- Palmer is too strong down the right - length then drop. 3-1.
- A drop by Palmer at the front right is too good. 4-1.
- A mistake by Kyme puts Palmer at 5-1.
- A great drop volley front right by Kyme - 2-5.
- And another winner from Kyme - 3-5
- Ball from Kyme just out. 6-3 to Palmer.
- Drop volley down the left from Kyme is out. 7-3
- Great winner off return of serve from Kyme. 4-7.
- Long rally - Kyme eventually tins it front right. 8-4 to Palmer.
- Fantastic recovery from Palmer with a winning drop. 9-4.
- Palmer wrong-foots Kyme with a drop front right. 10-4. Game and match point.
- Long rally down the left. Palmer then cross-courts deep right - too good for Kyme.
Palmer wins 11-4.
Post Match Interview
- After the match, Robert Edwards speaks to both Palmer and Kyme.
- Edwards asks Palmer what he thinks of Kyme. Palmer says that everyone has been on
the sharp end coming through the ranks. Palmer follows his results - he says it
is a fantastic effort for coming from such a small country. He wishes Kyme all the
best.
- Does Palmer enjoy the hospitality? Absolutely. It feels like home - or a second
home. When he's relaxed he plays well. He hopes to make it to the semis and play
well from there.
- Will Palmer now expect local support now Kyme is out? Palmer says he needs to earn
that respect. He hopes the crowd will get behind him, and if they do he appreciates
it.
- Kyme is now at the microphone. He is sorry he disappointed the crowd (applause).
All credit to David - he played well. Playing guys of this calibre really makes
it for him. He thanks the sponsors. He says it is a team effort - family, friends
etc. It means a lot to him, and he is trying. The tournament is spectacular. Next
year will be the World's - the biggest.
Our Summary
Kyme looked good early on, but the class and skill of Palmer showed through, and
in the end it was a comfortable win for the world number two. To his credit, Kyme played some great shots
- but Palmer just played better ones.
